Card sorting
Card sorting is a usability testing method used to help design or evaluate the information architecture of a website. In a card sorting session, participants organize topics into categories that make sense to them, and they may also help you label these groups. To conduct a card sort, we can use actual cards (pieces of paper) if sessions are being performed in person, online when tests are done remotely.
Card sorting helps us understand your users' expectations and understanding of your topics. Before performing a card sorting study, we review your audience types and prepare an inventory of content we are looking to test. With these prerequisites, card sorting can:
Get user input on how they feel the website should be structured
Solicit feedback on label categories and how they translate to a navigation system
Provide ideas for what types of content should appear on the home page and landing pages
Let your users help shape your website structure
